Asher

Asher was rescued by Tennessee Valley Golden Retriever Rescue in Knoxville, Tennessee. Imagine a 2-3 year old golden that weighed 42 pounds! His eyes were sunken, and his frame was thin. Though I had seen this sad-looking little guy in photos, when I met him it was heartbreaking. He seemed so fragile. It was discovered that Asher's emaciated appearance was not merely due to being a stray. He was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), which prevents the absorption of food.

With a special diet and prescription enzymes, Asher began to gain weight. Later he also required entropian surgery (an eyelift) to prevent his eyelids/lashes from ulcerating his eyes. EPI rarely corrects itself, but a slim chance existed that Asher would someday be able to discontinue the enzymes. Almost a year later, he was gradually weaned from the enzymes with success.

Today Asher is "fat and happy." Our family adopted Asher after he had been with us for a few months. Knowing how he first looked and felt makes something as simple as passionately chasing squirrels even more enjoyable to watch. Early on, I remember thinking that another foster home might be better for him. I'm thankful that I didn't act on that notion. Asher is one of the most gentle and loving dogs you could ever meet. Thanks Ashie ("Shu-she" as he is called by our 2-year old son) for enriching our home and hearts!
